Civil Works
Our experience
Civil works are now an increasingly integrated component of GCF’s expertise, supporting the development of complex railway and tramway infrastructure. This area of activity has evolved over time in support of the Group’s core business segments – from trackwork to electrification and signalling – and has progressively acquired greater autonomy and operational capabilities.
A decisive boost came in 2025 with the entry of Sveco S.p.A. into the Group, a construction company founded in 1995 and specialised in the design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure works, with consolidated experience in the railway sector.
The operation has made it possible to enhance and integrate a thirty-year heritage of expertise, strengthening GCF’s ability to manage increasingly complex infrastructure projects.
Competitive advantages
GCF and the Group’s companies can now rely on specialised expertise enabling them to manage the entire delivery process of a railway or tramway infrastructure, integrating civil works, railway trackwork, electrification and signalling.
The ability to operate as a system contractor makes it possible to coordinate different activities and professional skills within a single construction process, optimising the management of interfaces between works and systems and ensuring an integrated view of the infrastructure.
This combination of expertise represents one of GCF and the Group’s key strengths in the development of high-technology public transport systems.
In railway civil works, the experience gained enables the Group to operate on lines in service and to concentrate the most critical phases - such as bridge deck replacement - within planned traffic possessions, minimising the impact on railway services.
Our services
Through Sveco, the Group operates in the field of civil engineering and infrastructure construction, with particular focus on the design, construction, maintenance and functional rehabilitation of structures, underground special works and tunnels serving road and railway infrastructure.
The experience gained, RFI qualification for civil works on lines in service, and management system certifications for Quality, Health and Safety, and Environment demonstrate the Group’s ongoing commitment to ensuring quality, reliability and outstanding performance.
Engineering Services
The expertise acquired enables the Group to operate in particular in the following areas:

Replacement of the “Ponte al Pino” railway overpass - Florence Railway Junction
For the client RFI - Florence Territorial Infrastructure Operations Department, Sveco, as lead member of the temporary joint venture with SISCOM, carried out the structural strengthening of the existing abutments and the replacement of the bridge deck of the “Ponte al Pino” railway overpass (km 0+701, Firenze Statuto - Firenze Campo di Marte section), a late-19th-century structure connecting the city centre with the Campo di Marte area.
The new steel-concrete composite deck, 32 m long and 16 m wide and weighing approximately 550 tonnes, was installed in a single operation during the night of 26-27 July 2026 using a 2,000-tonne crane, within an 84-hour railway traffic possession. The bridge, retaining three traffic lanes and including pavements and a shared pedestrian and cycle path, was reopened to traffic in September 2026.
Replacement of the railway bridge at km 36+780 - Passo Corese, Fara in Sabina (RI)
In 2024, Sveco carried out, for the client RFI, the replacement of the steel bridge structure at km 36+780 on the Rome-Florence line (Slow Line), over Fosso Corese, near the railway station.
The existing structure, based on design documentation dating back to 1968 and in an advanced state of deterioration, was replaced by a new steel bridge structure weighing approximately 450 tonnes, 31 m long and 14.86 m wide, which was installed on 7 July 2024.
Preparatory works for the upgrade of the Olmata Tunnel to PC80 gauge, Rome-Cassino line
For the client RFI – Rome Territorial Infrastructure Operations Department, Sveco is a member company of the temporary joint venture led by MI.COS (contractor), operating under an RFI framework agreement for the maintenance of civil works in tunnels.
The project involves the execution of the works required in preparation for the upgrade of the Olmata Tunnel to PC80 gauge, on the Rome–Cassino line, based on the detailed design developed by ETS.
