Safety as a Culture

Second Meeting at the Senate of the Republic.

Safety as a corporate culture, beyond regulatory compliance. A unanimous chorus of excellence highlighted the ethical imperative of a "safety culture" at the conference held in the Sala Zuccari of Palazzo Giustiniani on Wednesday, July 24, initiated by Senator Antonio Trevisi. "Workplace Safety. Innovation and Integration of Key Areas" was the theme of the second meeting at the Senate of the Republic.

Legislators, jurists, entrepreneurs, and worker representatives discussed the need for a cultural paradigm shift to ensure that safety is truly addressed and experienced as an investment and development opportunity.
Moderated by Veronica Bonanomi, CEO of HSEquipe and host of BeSafe, the table featured speakers who provided analyses, insights, and stimuli with their presentations. Alessandro Paone, President of NODUS Center for Social Economy and Labor Studies, discussed "The Importance of Workplace Safety in the Current Legal and Labor Legislation Context"; Francesco Marella, Head of Environment, Safety & Health at Mitsubishi, spoke on "Training and Awareness"; Paolo Pennesi from the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies Inspectorate covered "Regulation and Controls"; and Andrea Filippini from Kiwitron addressed "Enabling Technologies".

In the panel discussion dedicated to entrepreneurs and already tested measures in the field, speakers included Francesca Simoncelli (Toyota Material Handling), Ettore Bordon (Cogne Acciai e Acciaierie d’Italia), Tiziano Onesti (GCF - Generale Costruzioni Ferroviarie), Claudio Coltelli (Gruppo Hera), Gianluca Calì (CGT - Caterpillar), and Massimiliano Arces (Autostrade per l’Italia), Mara Migliaccio (Italgas). Training, technological and organizational innovation, and the renewal of corporate culture were unanimously identified as the foundational pillars on which to measure the success of safety measures implemented in their respective companies.

"Workplace and production process safety," emphasized Tiziano Onesti, Chairman of the Board of Directors of GCF, "is fundamental for a company like ours that operates in truly complex contexts. Just as indispensable is a corporate culture capable of absorbing such a widespread regulatory framework, even going beyond mere regulatory compliance."

Over 22,000 hours of training and support have reduced accidents on GCF sites by over 70% from 2017 to 2023: a significant achievement, explained Prof. Onesti, considering the complexity of the production processes of a railway company that usually operates at night.

Simultaneously, numerous investments in new enabling technologies were made, such as participating in Proger's pilot project for testing smart T-shirts—presented at the Senate conference last Wednesday - that can significantly contribute to accident prevention, or the "Stop" project, developed with Kiwitron, to equip railway vehicles with AI-powered devices capable of detecting human shapes even at night (see the news).

The day concluded with speeches from association representatives Marinella De Maffutiis (ANMIL), Andrea Esposito (Fenimprese), Corrado Serrentino (Unacea), and Beatrice Sassi (ANCE), who reiterated their commitment to promoting workplace safety as a key element for the growth and development of Italian businesses.
