Innotrans: The Future of Mobility on a Global Stage

A global showcase of innovation, a privileged space for exchange. The future of mobility is showcased at Innotrans, the leading international trade fair for transport technology. Every two years, it attracts the best of the railway industry to Berlin. At the 2022 edition, held from September 24 to 27, GCF will be present (Hall 26, Stand 315) to demonstrate its expertise and meet with suppliers, clients, and international stakeholders

"We bring the experience gained over more than 70 years in the construction of railway infrastructure, track systems, electrification, and signaling. And, above all, our capacity to innovate. In this edition, we will particularly focus on showcasing cutting-edge solutions and products developed by our Research and Development departments to offer services characterized by high standards of quality and safety," explains Giuseppe Brecciaroli, Executive Director of Generale Costruzioni Ferroviarie.

Many innovations will be presented by GCF (Hall 26, Stand 315).

Starting with the "Level Crossing Protection," the proprietary GCF PAI-PL radar technology system designed for the automatic control of level crossings equipped with full barriers. Its purpose is to detect obstacles trapped inside the level crossing during the closure of the barriers and, if necessary, to automatically deny the signal clearance to the signaling system, which prevents the train from passing. A SIL 4 system capable of operating even under extreme weather conditions, it eliminates the risk of collisions between vehicles and trains, ensuring the safety of level crossings.

Also presented at the fair are developments in the modular applications of the NeurAIl System, the predictive diagnostic framework that, through digitalization, makes railways safer and smarter. It features two main applications. COGI (Optical Control of Insulated Joints), unique in its kind, allows for the remote, continuous, real-time, and micrometric-resolution measurement of deformations affecting Bonded Insulated Joints over time—particularly the ovalization of bracket holes caused by the cyclical action of dynamic loads and temperature fluctuations, leading to the delamination of joints. This allows for timely detection and intervention in cases of abnormal deformations and misalignments, which are often the cause of railway accidents. MOCV (Optical Measurement of Vertical Loads) can weigh trains during their passage with absolute precision and no degradation over time, thanks to the implementation of Machine Learning models developed specifically for this application.

InnoTrans is the leading international trade fair for transport technology. It takes place every two years in Berlin, occupying all 42 halls of the Berlin exhibition center, covering a total area of about 200,000 m². It's an impressive platform, designed to provide a 360-degree view of mobility across its five segments: Railway Technology (vehicles for passenger and freight transport, semi-finished products and components, vehicle services), Railway Infrastructure (construction, overhead contact lines, signaling, and control systems), Tunnel Construction (tunneling machines, safety, and communication systems), Public Transport (information and ticketing systems, traffic management), Interiors (vehicle furnishings and finishes, lighting, air conditioning, safety).

A unique feature of InnoTrans is its Outdoor Display area, equipped with over 3,500 meters of track for the exhibition of trains, high-speed trains, and railway machinery. Finally, there's a dense, top-tier program of meetings, debates, conferences, and specialist forums with leading industry experts and international decision-makers.

The 2022 edition saw over 2,700 exhibitors from 56 countries and welcomed about 132,000 visitors and qualified professionals from 169 countries, including public and private transport companies and operators, transport technology manufacturers and suppliers, construction companies, professionals and consultants, public administrators, government authorities, ministries, trade associations, research institutions, and media representatives. Each edition promises a sort of "world tour of innovations," offering a privileged glimpse into the future of mobility.
