With an overall length of approximately 48 km (45.4 km of AV/AC high-speed/high-capacity line and over 2 km of interconnections), the new line largely runs alongside existing infrastructure: about 30 km parallel to the A4 motorway and approximately 8 km aligned with the conventional Milan–Venice railway line.
The line starts in the municipality of Mazzano and extends as far as Verona, connecting to the new Verona Merci interconnection.
The railway alignment links the Lombardy and Veneto Regions, crossing three Provinces (Brescia, Mantua and Verona) and a total of 11 municipalities: Mazzano (BS), Calcinato (BS), Lonato del Garda (BS), Desenzano del Garda (BS), Pozzolengo (BS), Ponti sul Mincio (MN), Peschiera del Garda (VR), Castelnuovo del Garda (VR), Sona (VR), Sommacampagna (VR) and Verona.
Embankments (23.4 km), viaducts (0.9 km), cut-and-cover tunnels (10.2 km) and bored tunnels (6.6 km), cuttings (6.5 km) built during the construction phase of the alignment, together with a significant and parallel investment in road infrastructure (18.5 km of roads, including 15 overpasses and 9 underpasses), ensure a maximum gradient of 12‰.
The trackwork contract, worth approximately €78 million, involves more than one hundred specialized workers from GCF – Generale Costruzioni Ferroviarie SpA – lead company of the temporary joint venture formed with CLF, Salcef and Gefer – as well as from Gefer itself.
In 2025, construction activities made use of the modern Sorema TR45 – a recent addition and flagship of the GCF fleet – a new-generation track-laying train capable of installing up to 450 metres of track per hour, allowing the production target of one kilometre of line per day to be comfortably achieved.
The new double-track AV/AC line, with standard gauge of 1,435 mm and a track centre distance of 4.5 m, will be electrified at 3 kV DC and equipped with ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 signalling, ensuring interoperability with the European railway network.
The design speed is up to 250 km/h.
