Kenitra-Marrakech High-Speed Line

Construction of the Kenitra–Marrakech High-Speed Line – Lot 2, Morocco

The track

The Kenitra-Marrakech Ligne à Grande Vitesse (LGV) represents the natural extension of the Tangier–Kenitra line, the first high-speed railway line on the African continent, inaugurated in 2018.

In 2025, GCF, as Lead Company of the consortium together with three companies of its Group (Transalp Renouvellement, GCF Elettriche and GCFMA), was awarded Lot 2 by ONCF (the Moroccan National Railways Office), relating to the southern section between Sidi El Aidi and Marrakech.

Approximately 200 km of line are to be completed and brought into service by 2030, when Morocco, together with Spain and Portugal, will host the FIFA World Cup.

Project highlights

The new high-speed line runs on a dedicated alignment, mostly parallel to the existing one. GCF – Generale Costruzioni Ferroviarie is responsible for track laying on the platform constructed by third parties, as well as for the construction of the overhead contact line, from foundation excavation to pole installation, equipment fitting and tensioning.

Two construction bases located in Sidi El Aidi and Benguerir, covering a total area of 165 hectares, serve as logistics hubs, material storage and handling facilities, and maintenance areas for high-efficiency machinery.
At the larger site in Benguerir (1,000,000 m²), designed and built by GCF, in addition to the sleeper manufacturing plant, a brand-new electric rail welding facility has been installed. This plant will produce 324-metre-long rails by welding the original 36-metre rails, which will then be transported to site by a dedicated railway convoy composed of 17 specially equipped flat wagons.
