30 May 2018: a major celebration at the Ceneri Base Tunnel. The laying of the “golden sleeper block” marked the completion of railway track construction in the second tunnel of the NRLA: nine months of work to lay 33 kilometres of track resting on 98,000 LVT blocks fixed in 35,000 m³ of concrete, tamped by hand: the equivalent of 20 football pitches. An important step towards the final goal: the New Rail Link through the Alps, which from 2020 would connect Northern and Southern Europe.
