Ponte al Pino: 550-ton bridge launched

Sveco (GCF Group) plays in the Florence railway hub project

The launch of the new Ponte al Pino road overpass in the Florence railway hub marked the successful completion of one of the most complex engineering operations carried out in the Tuscan capital in recent years.

GCF expresses its great satisfaction with the contribution made, through the technical expertise of its subsidiary Sveco S.p.A., to the completion of the project, which RFI has described as “a strategic project to improve urban mobility and enhance the efficiency of regional and national rail traffic passing through the Florence railway hub.”

A highly complex technical and organisational operation, meticulously planned to ensure maximum safety and full compliance with the project schedule, was completed during a railway possession lasting just 84 hours.

The new bridge, weighing approximately 550 tonnes, was installed in a single lift using a 2,000-tonne crane with a lifting capacity of up to 1,600 tonnes, one of the largest cranes employed in Europe for this type of operation.

The launch, carried out during the night of 26–27 July, was attended by the highest representatives of the Italian Government, the Tuscany Regional Authority and the FS Group.

“The launching operation, completed in just over two hours, required the deployment of highly specialised personnel and the coordination of numerous technical experts,” RFI stated in its official press release.

The new bridge, 32 metres long and 16 metres wide, will retain three traffic lanes and will include pavements and a cycle path, improving safety, accessibility and urban mobility.
